Iron Man Robert Downey Jr.—First Look Looks Good

An article and picture of actor Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in today’s (Friday’s) USA Today http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2007-04-26-iron-man_N.htm
gives us hope that next year’s scheduled Iron Man motion picture has serious potential.

We had been aware for sometime that an Iron Man motion picture was in the works and even that Robert Downey Jr. had been cast as the Armored Avenger but we really hadn’t given it much thought until we say the above picture of RDJ as Tony Stark forging his Iron Man armor—dead bang! He’s got the look.

But the makers of Marvel Comic movies are finally learning that it take more than just the look to make a good comic book motion picture—it’s character first.

A quick upshot for Iron Man for those not in the know: In the comics, billionaire inventor playboy Tony Stark (think Howard Hughes) invented a suit of high tech armor (think a man-shaped, armed-to-the-teeth F-15 Eagle jet fighter) first to save his life, then later to protect his company while fighting bad guys along the way.

To FanBoyWonder, the definitive Iron Man was chronicled by David Micheline and Bob Layton in Iron Man (first series) #120-128, collected in the trade paper back The Power of Iron Man.

Like Tony Stark, Downey is a recovering alcoholic (and then some), as well as a cad, so the actor brings a unique understanding to the character.

"We didn't want to just go with a safe choice," Iron Man director Jon Favreau tells USA Today from the set of the film, due in theaters May 2, 2008. "The best and worst moments of Robert's life have been in the public eye. He had to find an inner balance to overcome obstacles that went far beyond his career. That's Tony Stark. Robert brings a depth that goes beyond a comic-book character who is having trouble in high school, or can't get the girl. Plus, he's simply one of the best actors around."

As it turns out, Downey is a fanboy and used to read Iron Man via his appearances in the Avengers.

Bottom Line: The Iron Age is coming next summer to a theatre near you.
